Each year 3rd-12th grade student contestants perform original or well-known essays, speeches, or poems in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King’s message of peace, tolerance, and social justice. African Queens Dance Company will be one of the featured entertainers for the event. The celebration also includes crafts for children and light refreshments. Last year we changed the ages and the format for our youth class to focus on children ages 3-6 (and their parents!) in our Thursday evening youth class. The new format was so successful we will be continuing it in the new year. Dancers who attend will learn coordination and discipline while moving to the beat! Check out photos from a past class and join us for the next Thursday Youth class. Both, the youth and the adult, classes are canceled for Thursday, December 4, 2014. Classes will resume on December 11, 2014.
There will be NO ADULT CLASS this Thursday, October 23, 2014. Youth class continues and will be held at its normal time. In place of the adult class on Thursday, October 23rd we will be hosting Cultural Arts of Gold for a film screening of Crisis in the Congo as part of the 7th Annual Breaking the Silence Congo Week. Congo Week is dedicated to raising the awareness of the atrocities that continue to take place in the Congo. This event is free and open to the public. The Unity Bar Association of Sacramento will honor Sacramento’s diverse community and the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Amendment passage with an evening of networking, dancing, dining and distinguished speakers, Windie O. Scott and Dr. Clarence B. Jones. Windie Scott, master of ceremonies for the evening, is a former State Bar of California Trustees Board Member and has served as President of the Sacramento County Bar, the Women Lawyers of Sacramento, and the Wiley Manuel Bar Association. Dr. Jones, who will serve as the keynote speaker for the evening, is a Scholar Writer in Residence at Martin Luther King, Jr. Research & Education Institute at Stanford University and a Visiting Professor at University of San Francisco.
