We are in for a treat! Guest instructor Biza Sompa will be teaching this Thursday, March 3, 2016 during the 6pm adult class. Biza Sompa began his professional dance career in Brazzaville, Congo with Ballet Damar and the Congolese National Dance Company. And as a member of Congolese dance companies based in Paris, he toured throughout Germany, France and Belgium. In 1979, Biza Sompa founded Bichini Bia Congo Dance Theatre in Ann Arbor, MI. Bichini Bia Congo "promotes the preservation and practice of authentic Congolese Dance and African culture" and uses dance to "emphasize the common aspects of culture that unify us all". Biza and Bichini Bia Congo also travel throughout the US visiting elementary, middle and high schools and using Congolese dance as a creative teaching tool to educate and motivate students in the US. Currently, Biza is also an instructor in the School of Music, Theater & Dance at the University of Michigan and at Washtenaw Community College in Michigan. ![]() Leslie Carter and African Queens Dance Company are honored to host master dancer and choreographer Malang Bayo of Casamance, Senegal for an exciting dance workshop this Thursday. Malang Bayo is a former member of the Great Ballet D'Afrique Noir of Mansour Gueye and the National Ballet of Senegal. In 1992, he formed his own performance company, Mussukeba Sane West African Ballet, which performed extensively throughout Southern California, often working with the film industry. In addition to an amazing body of work onstage, Malang has been involved with many popular productions such as the 1988 Olympics, feature films Congo and Poetic Justice and performances with the likes of Ziggy Marley and The Rolling Stones. This class is perfect for all ages and skill levels. Dancers will be treated to live drumming and extraordinary dance instruction!
